Today together with our collaborators, we planted 16,900 mangrove seedlings at Mida Majaoni in Kilifi County. We assessed the status of last season's and previous planting and we are happy they established well. We also had time to discuss with the communities the threats facing mangroves among them, pests, parasites and diseases. The species planted were 1,200 Avicennia experimental seedlings, 6,500 Rhizophora and 9,200 Ceriops propagules). This is a long term collaboration with four women groups who raise the seedlings and source the propauleses for restoration and sale. The groups will be supported to also grow fruit and other high value trees on their farms in addition to establishing an apiary for income generation and Green job creation.
These humble people are totally committed to their belief that protecting the mangroves is a protection to their livelihoods.
